Frequently Asked Questions on Police Requests for Tests from Detainees in Custody for Sexually Transmitted Infections

This document replaces the Position Statement on the Management of Requests by Police for Intimate Samples for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) from Detainees in Police Custody (which has been archived).

It highlights the need for appropriate arrangements to be in place with a genito-urinary medicine (GUM)/sexual health (SH) clinic and laboratory, so that such samples are taken and managed by appropriately trained clinicians, microbiologists and virologists, to ensure that all therapeutic and forensic/medico-legal aspects are addressed.
