Description of Benefits

Eligibility & Application

A very special opportunity is presently available for Clinicians Working in Secure and Detained Settings (SDS) to become Foundation Members of FFLM.

Applications for Foundation Membership of the FFLM are strictly time limited and will be considered only from 01 August 2021 until the closing time of 23.59 on 31 July 2024, after which time, admission to  Clinicians Working in Secure and Detained Settings (SDS) Membership of the Faculty will be by examination only.

The criteria used by other Royal Colleges for Foundation status have been adapted as the basis for Foundation Membership of the FFLM.

  • These criteria are:
  • a minimum THREE years experience in their respective speciality in the secure and detained environment setting
  • possession of the relevant postgraduate qualification(s) in a medical specialty for SDS that is Membership/Fellowship Royal College of General Practitioners or equivalent (JCPTGP)/Membership/Fellowship Royal College of Psychiatrists

Additionally, Affiliate Membership is available to clinicians working within secure and detained settings who are currently registered with:

  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • The General Dental Council
  • The General Optical Council
  • The General Pharmaceutical Council
  • The Health Care Professions Council

Applicants for our Affiliate Membership can use our standard membership application form.

Detailed guidance notes have been prepared to assist applicants, nominees and referees in completion of their applications and to assist them in presenting their application.

If you meet the requirements, you may complete the application form (below) and referee form for consideration at the next Membership & Fellowship Committee (MFC).  The submission closing dates are available for each meeting held during the year.  It is important not to miss the Foundation closing date, so we would recommend not leaving your application until 31 July 2024, as incomplete applications will not be considered.

If the MFC approve your application, you then need to complete and sign a Form of Faith, make your subscription  and application fee payment, and then your membership will be shared with the Board for ratification to complete the process.  After Board ratification, your diploma certificate will be prepared and you will have the choice to have this presented at the next Annual General Meeting, or posted to you.

If you are a qualified healthcare professional, the FFLM needs to verify that you are registered with a professional regulatory body and that you are in good standing. Please provide the web address of your regulatory body to enable the FFLM to verify your status on-line. If you know it is not possible to verify your status on-line with your particular regulatory body, then please provide the full name and postal address of the body. The Board may exercise its discretion on a case by case basis and allow you, if you do allied work, or if you are in training, to join as an Affiliate member even if you are not registered with a regulatory body.

Please note: If you are a healthcare professional and the FFLM cannot verify that you are in good standing with a professional regulatory body, then your application for membership will not be successful.

Information submitted via this form will be used to carry out any reasonable activity related to the administration of the FFLM Foundation Membership /Fellowship process and is held subject to relevant data protection legislation

Criteria

This form is ONLY for Clinicians Working in Secure and Detained Settings applying for either Foundation Membership or Foundation Fellowship of the Faculty.

Failure to complete all sections may result in rejection of the application as the Faculty considers this information is essential to enable the Membership and Fellowship Committee (MFC) to determine whether to recommend to the Board that an individual should be awarded Foundation Status at either category.

The MFC will assess the application based on the information within this form and the information submitted by the nominated referees.  Because of the innate variability of the structure and information contained within Curriculum Vitae (CV) the MFC will not consider them.  Please DO NOT insert or attach CVs to this form.

Key Points

All applications are reviewed and assessed by the MFC who may take advice at their discretion. It is a thorough but confidential process based on submitted information only and which does not involve the candidates directly.

The application will be reviewed at the MFC. Following this review candidates will be informed of the outcome and the application will be sent to the FFLM Board for ratification. Candidates will then be updated once the board has ratified their application.

If the outcome is unfavourable the applicant may apply again (within the overall limited time frame for Foundation status as noted above). Please note - unsuccessful applicants are not automatically reviewed by the Faculty and so the onus is strictly on an applicant to submit a new application form if they wish to be re-considered by the MFC.

Applications will be considered at the next appropriate meeting of the MFC. The closing dates for completed applications and the dates of the MFC meetings are available on the Faculty website.
