GMC Guidance for Medical Witnesses
At the end of January 2024, the GMC published updated guidance explaining the types of legal proceedings medical professionals might get involved in, and the different types of evidence they might be required to give.
If applicable to you, please read the guidance provided by the GMC, by clicking the link below, to ensure that you are following the ten stated principles of good practice when acting as a witness in legal proceedings, and the specific responsibilities for witnesses-of-fact and expert witnesses.
The guidance touches on the duty placed on medical expert witnesses, also that they “must have adequate knowledge of the current procedural requirements around providing expert reports and giving evidence…,” and that they “should take part in relevant training to develop the practical knowledge and competencies required for the role…” (Paragraph 20).
