Expansion of E-learning – Request for module writers
Request for volunteers to write General Forensic Medicine e-learning modules
The FFLM/Ulster University E-learning course was revised and updated in May 2019. The course covers the following FFLM exams:
- DLM
- MFFLM Part 1
- LFFLM (SOM)
- MFFLM (SOM) Part 2
We are currently undertaking an expansion of the e-learning material to include General Forensic Medicine (GFM) with the aim of making the modules available to candidates from October 2022 onwards.
Therefore, we are seeking:
- Members (who hold the MFFLM) to assist with the module content. All the proposed modules are listed below. There is a £350 honorarium per module (in line with Faculty policy) and CPD points for revalidation/appraisal purposes.
We can currently offer £350 per module, as NHSE/I are providing some funding for the project. Please note that this will only be paid upon satisfactory completion of the module within the agreed timescales.

Module topics are:
Module 1 – INITIAL ASSESSMENT [maps to Module 1 syllabus] Initial Contact Triage of calls – Risk assessment – Liaising with police, legal authorities and clinical & professional colleagues {include roles e.g. custody sergeant, CDO etc.) – Documentation – Fitness to detain & interview – Levels of observation – Need for an AA/interpreter – Balancing forensic & medical needs – Suitability of premises – When to escalate – Sudden death – Management plan & safety netting

Module 2 – CLINICAL ASSESSMENT & MANAGEMENT [maps to Module 1 on syllabus] Clinical content (also links with other modules in syllabus, but makes sense to have separate module) – Head injury – Injury assessment, interpretation & differential diagnosis – Methods of restraint – Intoxication& withdrawal – Mental health & risk assessment – Asthma – Epilepsy – Diabetes – Pregnancy – Dealing with medical emergencies

Module 3 – CONSENT & CONFIDENTIALITY [Maps to Module 2 – syllabus] Consent & confidentiality – Intimate samples – Road traffic procedures (specifically consent & confidentiality) – procedures are dealt with in Module 5 below – Clinical implications ‘clouded competence’ – Limits of consent & confidentiality due to tension between forensic & medical – Chaperones
