Presented by Dr George Fernie, Senior Medical Reviewer for Healthcare Improvement Scotland, and chaired by Dr Alex Gorton, President of the FFLM, this webinar offers a valuable perspective for professionals across forensic and legal medicine.

George is the Senior Medical Reviewer based at Healthcare Improvement Scotland, where his main role is to lead the Death Certification Review Service for the system of random, proportionate scrutiny of MCCDs implemented in May 2015. He was the inaugural Registrar and third President of the FFLM. George is also the Interim Chair of the NHS Scotland Public Benefit and Privacy Panel, the Caldicott Guardian at Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Chair of the UK Caldicott Guardian Council and a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law at the University of Bolton.

The webinar will

  • Outline the background and purpose of the UK Caldicott Guardian Council.
  • Consider the common law basis for the sharing of information.
  • Describe the legal, ethical and appropriate use of data
  • Contextualise information usage within the home nations of the UK.
  • Explain the challenges of confidentiality within the criminal justice system and how to negotiate these to the benefit of society and individuals.
