St Mary's Centre 7th Annual Conference 2009

Conference to focus on adolescents and sex crimes The challenges of providing co-ordinated and relevant sexual assault services to teenagers and young adults is the focus of Manchester's St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre's 7th Annual Conference which will take place on February 25 and 26 2009 at Manchester Town Hall. Key areas of debate at the two day conference will be dilemmas in sharing information with different agencies, how to approach child on child sexual contact, difficulties in age determination of victims from images and the changing nature of teenage communication. The annual St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre Conference has provided valuable insight to sexual assault services in the UK to practitioners working in a range of agencies including Police, health, voluntary agencies, charities and social care. Home Office Minister for Police, Security and Community Safety, Vernon Coaker MP, will formally open the 2009 Conference. He will be joined by keynote speakers including Professor David Wells, from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine in Australia, Sara Swann MBE, Consultant for Child Sexual Exploitation and the Honorable Mr Justice Ryder, Family Division Liaison Judge for the Northern Circuit. Dr Catherine White, Clinical Director for St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre said: “This year's conference will examine in detail some of the difficult issues around confidentiality when dealing with young adolescents and the challenges and threats posed by the increasingly fast world of on-line communication among teenagers. “We will also be debating issues that arise from child on child sexual contact and targeted abuse of ‘Looked After Children’, and determining how sexual assault services can be improved to meet the needs of young people.” The full conference programme is available on request or visit www.stmaryscentre.org.
