General Psychiatry and The Mentally Disordered Offender

It is now not uncommon for mental health professionals to be assessing individuals in the police station. This often involves negotiating apparent conflict between the needs of the criminal justice system and the needs of the mental health service. The old dichotomy of “mad” and “bad” is no longer relevant to services wishing to deliver appropriate care to vulnerable individuals whilst maintaining safety for the population. In order to work effectively there is a need for all to understand each others’ roles and be clear about the necessary processes involved in delivering appropriate care. This training day will aim to equip delegates with the skills necessary to work safely and effectively and allow time for discussion of key issues between professionals.
