Application to be an Examiner for the Membership Examination of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (MFFLM)

The Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFLM) is seeking to appoint examiners for the MFFLM. The Examiners of the MFFLM act on behalf of the FFLM in overseeing the academic arrangements for setting the MFFLM and in maintaining the standard of the Examination.

The exam will be two parts and run twice a year - 1st part MCQ; 2nd part Written and Practical [OSCE based assessment]

The post of examiner has a considerable time commitment that includes the need to undertake compulsory training, such as equality and diversity training. There will also be a need for consideration of documents and preparation of work prior to attendance at workshops to assist in the writing of examination question [written and OSCE].

This is a non-salaried position, although reasonable travel costs will be considered by the FFLM. CME points will be awarded for the educational time expended.

Applicants must comply with the following three criteria: 

  1. Examiners must be Members of the Faculty in good standing with both the Faculty and GMC.
  2. Examiners must have a minimum of five years experience in Forensic Medicine or as a Medical Defence Advisor following suitable training.
  3. Examiners must be currently in active practice.

Highly desirable criteria include:

  1. To have relevant experience as an examiner in forensic and legal medicine in the last five years.
  2. To have participated in equality and diversity training within the previous three years and to be able to provide a current certificate of authentication.
  3. To have been involved in postgraduate education in forensic and legal medicine within the last five years.
  4. To have contributed to forensic and legal literature in the last five years.

Further criteria which may inform selection include:

  1. Reliability (in both the scientific and behavioural senses of the word).
  2. The ability to interpret and apply agreed marking schedules.
  3. The ability to make consistent and unbiased judgements, and to rank-order candidates.
  4. The ability to make and justify pass / fail decisions.
  5. Willingness to subordinate personal opinion to group consensus. 
  6. Effective functioning in small and large groups.
  7. Combining courtesy and sensitivity to candidates with the necessary degree of challenge.
  8. The capacity to ‘think on one’s feet’ and maintain control in oral examinations.
  9. Flexibility to adapt examining style to individual candidates. 
  10. The capacity to contribute and respond to long-term policy changes.

Applicants should complete a self nomination form (link on right side of this page) which should elicit a brief curriculum vitae and be supported by two references.

The two referees should be:

  1. A medical colleague who is familiar with the applicant’s work and who currently practices in forensic and /or legal medicine. 
  2. A current Officer of the Faculty or a Fellow of the FFLM.

Closing Date for Application to Become an Examiner for Membership FFLM:

17.00hrs on Friday 22nd February 2008.

 

Notification of Outcome of Application:

Successful candidates will be advised that they have been recommended to move forward to formal training as an examiner. It must be noted that final formal appointment has to be ratified by the Faculty Board in due course. The appointment as an examiner may be terminated by the Board’s unfettered discretion.
