Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. As well as the more obvious concerns relating to child and young person complainants of alleged sexual assault, it must be remembered that approximately 20% of persons detained in police custody are less than 18 years old.

Competencies for safeguarding children and young people have recently been revised with specific competencies for Forensic Physicians (FPs) working in general forensic medicine (custodial medicine) and sexual offence medicine. The aim of this course is to give healthcare professionals an understanding of Level 3 child and young person safeguarding knowledge.

The FFLM Quality Standards recommend that all Forensic Physicians should complete safeguarding training prior to commencing forensic work and then at least every three years. At the end of this course, healthcare professionals will be able to:

  • Outline the anticipated safeguarding competencies for FPs and other healthcare professionals;
  • Identify child safeguarding needs relating to persons detained in police custody;
  • Identify the safeguarding needs of child and young person complainants of sexual abuse;
  • Describe appropriate safeguarding procedures to be followed.
